Featuring a new team, more boats and more sailors the second season of the America’s Cup World Series is scheduled to begin Wednesday, Aug. 22, at ACWS San Francisco.

The entry list of eight teams includes Artemis Racing (SWE), China Team (CHN), Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL), Energy Team (FRA), J.P. Morgan BAR (GBR), Luna Rossa Challenge 2013 (ITA), ORACLE TEAM USA (USA) and Team Korea (KOR).

The fleet now numbers 11 boats with Artemis Racing, Luna Rossa Challenge and ORACLE TEAM USA each fielding two crews, and the return of China Team. At this regatta there are 55 sailors competing from 12 countries. (View the event crew list at ACWS San Francisco Crew List.)

“With a new team, more boats and more sailors, ACWS San Francisco should be an outstanding regatta,” said America’s Cup Regatta Director Iain Murray. “The racecourse will certainly be more intense than we've seen before, and the consistent strong winds and current-driven chop will keep the competitors on their toes. We’ve already seen a few capsizes in training, but we know everyone will be on their game when the starting gun fires.”

The first day of the new season will see six of the teams contesting a series of match racing qualifiers with the three winners advancing to the Quarterfinal Round, scheduled Thursday and Friday, where they’ll meet the top five seeds based on the standings from the 2011-12 ACWS Match Racing Championship.

One of the qualifier teams is newcomer J.P. Morgan BAR, skippered by Ben Ainslie. Ainslie recently won his fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal – his fifth medal overall – and joins the ACWS fleet with the long-term goal of leading an America’s Cup challenge.

“As a kid growing up I really wanted to be part of the Olympics and do well at that and also to be part of an America’s Cup team that could win,” said Ainslie. “This is the next stage in my career and I’m really excited to be a part of the Cup.”

ACWS San Francisco will also see the debut of a second yacht from Artemis Racing, the Swedish Challenger of Record for the America’s Cup. Artemis Racing Red will be helmed by Santiago Lange of Argentina, a two-time Olympic bronze medalist in the Tornado class, and is entered alongside stablemate Artemis Racing White, led by team skipper Terry Hutchinson.

Hutchinson’s crew is the No. 1 seed based on last season’s match racing championship.

“We were certainly happy to win last season, but that’s done and dusted,” said Hutchinson. “Racing on San Francisco Bay might be the most challenging of all the venues we’ve visited.”

Wednesday’s racing schedule features No. 6-seed Team Korea vs. No. 11 J.P. Morgan BAR, No. 7 Luna Rossa – Piranha vs. No. 10 Artemis Racing Red and No. 8 Luna Rossa – Swordfish vs. No. 9 China Team. Each match is a best-of-three.

Acabou o campeonto europeu de 470 em Garda, Itália. Os portugueses, João Villas-Boas e Tomás Camelo finalizaram em 10º da frota de prata, 50º da geral.

Hoje sendo o ultimo dia do campeonato e com o calendário ainda por cumprir, não se conseguiram fazer as duas regatas previstas sendo os resultados finais os mesmos de ontem.

Hoje o dia esteve perfeito em Breitenbrunn e já fizeram duas regatas cada frota e já estão a chegar a terra.

Slingsby e Malcolm Page desvendam o futuro

Laser sailing gold medallist Tom Slingsby is contemplating a switch of class - if he decides not to retire from Olympic competition.

Slingsby returned to Australia on Wednesday in a vastly different frame of mind to his ill-fated Olympic campaign in Beijing four years ago.

On that occasion, his Olympic dream turned into a nightmare after he finished a lowly 22nd.

Fast forward four years and five-time Laser world champion Slingsby experienced a very different set of emotions after stepping back onto Australian soil.

"(Four years ago) I was at the back of the plane and when I finally got off, the media were interviewing the medallists and I just snuck straight out the back," Slingsby told AAP.

"Whereas today, being at the front of the plane and one of the first off, it was a huge contrast in emotions."

Slingsby said he'd been thinking about making London his last Olympics, but wouldn't make a decision until finishing his campaign with defending America's Cup champion, Oracle Team USA.

"I'm going to do this America's Cup for a bit and see how I enjoy that and then make a decision when I finish with them in October 2013," Slingsby said.

"If I went again, I'm not sure if I would stick with the Laser, I might change to the Finn or another class.

"I don't think I'll sail the Laser anymore, I think the Australian Laser is in really good shape, with our young guys coming through.

"Tom Burton is leading that charge, he's top five in the world and I think he'll be top one or two very shortly."

Slingsby will be one of the first of the 2012 crop of Australian gold medallists to be back in competition.

He will head to Hamilton Island on Thursday for the annual race week, where he will be among the crew on the sloop Black Jack, contesting the IRC Australian championship Grand Prix division.




470 gold medallist Malcolm Page, who carried the flag at the closing ceremony after becoming the first Australian to win two sailing gold medals, will continue competing, despite retiring from Olympic racing.

"I'm hanging up my stinky wetsuit shoes for Olympic competition, but I'm a sailor for life," Page told AAP.

"I've always loved the sport and I will continue to sail. This summer coming up I will be competing in the SB20 world championships and I'm going to be back steering an 18-foot skiff this season."

Sailing led the way for Australia in London with three gold medals and Page said he envisaged the sport going from strength to strength.

The team will be known as J.P. Morgan BAR and will start competing in the America’s Cup World Series on 22 August as Ainslie moves from the single-handed 16 foot Finn dinghy to the fixed wing AC45 with a crew of five.

The announcement adds to an extraordinary couple of weeks for Ainslie, who won his fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal and was given the honour of carrying the British flag into the Olympic Stadium at the Closing Ceremony. “J.P. Morgan has been such an important part of the team helping me achieve my success in the Finn over the last six years. I am delighted that the firm is now part of the BAR team, too. It’s so important to have that support with the America’s Cup World Series starting so soon after the Games,” said Ainslie.

The J.P. Morgan BAR team sponsorship extends the partnership that began back in 2007. During that time, Ainslie has added two Finn World Championship to his tally and two Olympic gold medals.

With the short turnaround time between the Olympic Games and the first America’s Cup World Series event, securing sponsorship support before the Games was a key milestone for the BAR team. The stage is now set for Ainslie to quickly refocus his energies and skills towards a new discipline as he takes his first steps to winning back the oldest trophy in sport for Britain, the America’s Cup.

Ben Ainslie, dubbed by many as ‘Big Ben’ in the last few weeks, was in London today sailing a special British branded Finn along the Thames in front of Big Ben to give thanks to those who have supported him along the way to his historic fourth Olympic gold medal.

On the day before he heads to San Francisco, California in the U.S. to start campaigning for the 2012/13 America’s Cup World Series, Ben was pleased to announce that his long-term UK sponsor, J.P. Morgan, is extending its support to a global sponsorship, becoming the main partner of Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR).

Os medalhistas olímpicos Robert Scheidt e Bruno Prada decidiram se antecipar à decisão final da ISAF (Federação Internacional de Vela) sobre a saída da classe Star dos Jogos Rio 2016, e escolheram fazer campanha olímpica para Laser e Finn, respectivamente. De volta ao Brasil, após a conquista do bronze em Londres, a dupla se emocionou durante a entrevista coletiva na sede do Banco do Brasil, em São Paulo. Juntos, Robert e Bruno conquistaram 52 títulos em 11 anos de parceria.
