GP26
A report from designer Jim Donovan on his GP 26 project
Windseeker Yachts located near Istanbul has launched their first jp donovan DESIGN GP 26, with a second boat sold to a Hong Kong sailor, expected to set sail in a few days, and the third hull in the mold. They have beautiful tooling for their boats and are capable of providing very high quality yachts as can be seen in thephotos of the finished boats.
When we sailed Hull No 1 in Istanbul it was a most gratifying to experience first-hand the results; it is an exceptionally well balanced hull that planes effortlessly; control is never a concern. In 18 knots of wind the boat was very stable and achieved 16 knots of boat speed easily. Reaching along in 16 knots of wind we sailed at 14 knots boat speed in complete control, as can be seen in this video taken that day.
I purposely designed my GP 26 with a powerful hull shape to extract maximum horsepower from the large rig. When the puff hits the yacht’s stability allows to crew to keep the sails powered up promoting acceleration and planing. The high stability hull form is obvious in the wide transom and topside panels above the chine approaching vertical. Careful balance of the hull’s volume insures the boat retains good manners and neutral helm as it heels, improving acceleration out of tacks and gybes.
The deck layout is uncompromised for racing, carefully organized to allow the active crew work needed to get the boat around the race course. Where some sport yachts this size have dispensed with winches, I have a set of small winches to deal primarily with the highly loaded spinnaker sheets and halyards. The mainsheet traveler spans the cockpit aft of the rudder, reducing the load on the traveler car and getting the mainsheet purchase clear of the crew during gybes. Transverse jib tracks provide complete control for jib sheeting.
Sophisticated structural design is required to achieve the minimum class displacement. Class rules restrict the use of exotic materials, so I selected e-glass/epoxy/foam core construction as the best choice for strength to weight. Vacuum laminates with toughened epoxy resin systems and adhesives are used throughout the structure. Windseeker’s precise construction methods avoid the weight gains from excessive fairing or gel-coat. Recent rule edits define that carbon may be used for the structures to withstand the forces generated by the large rig and deep keel with heavy bulb.
The high aspect carbon rudder is positioned well forward to avoid ventilation at high heel angles and to generate more lift upwind. The GP26 keel rules allow a deep keel fin and heavy bulb – these are great attributes for such a powered-up design. We’ve worked with mast builders to develop specialized carbon spar sections to the GP 26 rule measurements for maximum stiffness at minimum weight. Although the spar weight is somewhat conservative at 45kg fully rigged, the exceptionally powerful masthead sails generate forces that’ll launch these boats at speeds approaching 25 knots – the need for sensible class spar weights becomes obvious at these times.
My first GP26 design for Kevin Farrar started construction in May ’09 in the lower level of his sail loft in New London, Connecticut. Kevin is carefully building his boat to a very high standard and has the hull and deck structures 95% complete. His project is expected to be launched summer 2012. A second GP26 from Kevin’s tooling will be starting soon.
ORC’s smallest GP box rule class continues to attract interest in disparate parts of the world, with the GP 26 class experiencing steady growth with the fleet now approaching 30 boats. This fleet has boats worldwide: in South America, where the fleet saw it strongest initial growth; Europe; Russia; USA; Australia; and Hong Kong. And the price? yes, $50,000 delivered to the East Coast of the USA!

Winger
Ben Hall built a hard sail for his A-Cat a few years ago, sailing it at the Islamorada A Worlds. a few years back in Islamorada, FL. While it was steaming fast in some conditions, Hall’s rig suffered from excessive weight and flexibility, and it never was the silver bullet that itis in, say, the C-Class. In fact, Ben finished those Worlds in roughly the same position he finished the one before it in, and his boat ended up retired with Oracle Racing as some kind of test bed. And the wingnuts wept.
Now they can rejoice: The A-Cats are giving it another go!
With some new thoughts and new tech, we expect a handful of winged A boats later this year in yet another Islamorada A-Worlds, and many insiders think this may be the year of the Winged World Champ. Like the Moth Class, the A-Class won’t ban anything until after a Worlds is run. Make no mistake though: If someone proves in Florida that a wing is essential to winning, a full ban is likely, since there is strong agreement that the logistics and costs involved would harm the goals of the class. Interestingly, if the wings do well but not great, we’re likely to see a lot more development of them over the next year.

The case against weight discrimination
Roland Gaebler argues that the Olympic equipment for Rio 2016 is likely to require emaciated dwarfs for crew
Saturday April 28th 2012, Author: Roland Gaebler, Location: none selected
For their evaluation trials [of the women's skiff and the mixed multihull], ISAF used a Submission from the 470 class to set the target crew weights for the Mixed Multihull and Skiff women evaluations. As a result of this target weights for the evaluation trials were set at 130kg for Mixed Multihull and 120kg for the Skiff women.
With the loss of the Star and the Elliot 6, so seven of the ten Olympic Classes are now set to have an optimal team-weight below average. Globally, men have an average weight of around 79kg, while the average for women is 65kg. In the graphic below you can see, how this equates to the Olympic equipment due to feature in Rio.
Add to this the fact that Rio de Janeiro is a light wind venue giving ultra-lightweight crew an added advantage, then the majority of athletes have no chance to reach the lower weight limits and this makes it impossible to have the optimal weight for an Olympic sailing campaign.
Still two to four of the Olympic boats have yet to be selected (Mixed Multihull + Skiff Women) and also Kiteboarding is open in terms of its weights. So it’s not too late to change this and get Olympic sailing back in balance and away from discriminating against athletes above average weight.
The average weight for males swimmers is 80.4 ± 7.0kg. Freestyle sprinters have the highest weight – 84.3 ± 5.8kg, while freestyle distance swimmers have the lowest weight - 76.4 ± 6.6kg. This difference between the sexes is statistically significant: Male freestyle sprinters are around 20kg heavier than female freestyle sprinters, while the average weight of male swimmers is around 15kg higher than female swimmers.

Soling World Masters Championship
Balatonalmadi, Hungary
With an early start on the final day at the 2012 Masters being held at the Balaton Lake, the green waters and the surrounding hills and absolutely no wind responded to a tired fleet.
But no matter how tired the sailors were, the boats were all out at 10:25 local time while waiting for a dark line in the lake and suddenly the most beautiful wind arrived, and a perfect start at 10:30, blowing 6 Beaufort in nice hiking conditions, steady and straight.
Peter Hall, Steve Lacey and Ben Medendorp (CAN) had complications with the mainsail at the beginning but they sorted it out in time and managed the start.
It was the typical Balaton breeze, in which the team Audi-Ramadabalaton of George Wossala, Pepe Nemeth and Karoly Vezer (HUN) were comfortable sailing in. They were morally obligated to win the final race from the start, and they did, just followed by Thomas Maschkiwitz, Stefan Wenzel and Christoph Wossala, Germany's Uwe Steingross, Karsten Eller and Tim Giesecke were also comfortable when the wind came and came through in third.
It was a nice ending for a championship with light winds, the wind helped to put many smiles in the faces no matter the results, while the prize giving was held in the lobby of the Ramadabalaton Hotel at 14:00.
It was the second time team Team Audi-Ramadabalaton have won the Masters World title this time over Maschkiwitz, Wenzel and Wossala who finish second climbing slowly up the leader board each day. The Canadians, who were defending champions, came through in third with Ukraine's Igor Yushko, Sergey Pichugin and Yarmolenka Dzmitriy finishing fourth.
The 2012 Masters leaves some valuable experience for the organization that will be hosting the 2013 Worlds, in which more racing days and earlier starts will be scheduled.
