Australia’s Matthew Belcher and Malcolm Page will be the pair to beat in the Men’s 470 at the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition having won three World Championship titles in a row. The team have blown the competition away in recent times and on 2 August they will be part of the 27-boat fleet that begin their Olympic Sailing Competition on the Nothe Course.

Not only do they have their 470 titles to their name they have an unbeaten run that stretches from December 2011 where they picked up their second consecutive world title together proving they are a force to be reckoned with.

Page comes into London 2012 as the defending Men’s 470 Olympic Champion having won gold with Nathan Wilmot in Beijing 2008, a feat he is keen to repeat, “There’s no better feeling than flying the flag as high as possible and the dream is to have the middle flag on the three posts at London 2012.”

On his memories of the podium at Beijing 2008 Page said, “The key moment that got the tingle down my spine was when we were standing on that podium listening to my national anthem and watching my country flag go up. I get goosepimples now even when I think about it.”

Having won 420 Worlds title in 2000, Belcher was given the honour of carrying the Australian flag at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. In that moment he caught the Olympic bug and having trained with Wilmot and Page in their build up for Beijing 2008 he missed out on selection. But going into London 2012 he is looking forward to representing his country on the global stage, “You can’t really take it for granted, it’ such a privilege to represent your country,” said Belcher. “To have this opportunity this time around we’re just going to make the most of it.”

Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic (CRO) will be one of the crews chasing the Australians for the coveted gold medal. The pair won the 470 European Championship in Largs, Scotland ahead of London 2012 and have finished on the podium at four consecutive 470 World Championships, including a gold medal in 2009. On their relationship together Marenic said, “We’ve sailed together for ten years now so we know each other very well and we also communicate really well which is the key and an important thing. We know each other since Optimists so we’re also really good friends. Until recently we even lived together.”

France’s Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos know what it takes to beat Belcher and Page on Weymouth waters having done so twice in 2011. The French duo finished second at the 2012 470 Worlds and will aim to push to Australians all the way.

Sydney 2000 bronze medallist Juan de la Fuente (ARG) will be one of the most experienced sailors in the fleet with London 2012 his fourth Olympic Games. He gives up ten years on his helm Lucas Calabrese but is excited by his young helm, “This is a new challenge with Lucas,” said de la Fuente.“He is really talented and young. He is new blood and wants to improve all the time and he trains really hard.”

Portugal’s Alvaro Marinho is also one of the long-term campaigners, with numerous World Championships to his credit, and a best Olympic performance of 5th at the 2000 Olympics. Competing in Weymouth with crew Miguel Nunes, the pair have plenty of experience and could well turn in a top three performance.

Gideon Kliger and Eran Sela (ISR) won bronze at the Weymouth and Portland International Regatta, the Olympic Test Event, last year and have what it takes to mix it up at the top. The pair are focused and have worked well together in the build-up to London 2012.Kliger said, “Naturally our target is the gold medal. We will work hard to achieve that. We are not the only ones I guess, but this is our goal. We don’t want the bronze like the test event!” Kliger's girlfriend, Camille Lecointre, will be also on a mission to secure a podium place for France in the 470 Women event.

Paul Snow Hansen and Jason Saunders are part of a balanced New Zealand sailing team with a blend of experience and newcomers amongst the ranks. The pair, both 21, have World Cup medals with a best performance of eighth at four 470 Worlds competed in together. Despite their youth Snow-Hansen is hoping for a good performance, “Hopefully we’ll be in the running for the medals but we’ll sail our best and see. We’ve got a good range of sailors with a few who have done a lot of Olympics and we’ve got a lot of young guys. The experienced guys have a lot to teach us.”

Other frontrunners will include Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell (GBR) who have the home water knowledge, Sven and Kalle Coster (NED), Ferdinand Gerz/Patrick Follman (GER), Ryunosuke Harada/Yugo Yoshida (JPN) and Finland's Lindgren brother, Joonas and Niklas.

There could also be a surprise from Russia’s Sheremetyev brothers, Maxim and Mikhail. They have been competing together for many years, and recently claimed a bronze medal at the 2012 470 European Championships, having chipped away at the competition in a fairly quiet but solid manner.

The Men’s 470 fleet set sail at 1200 hours local time on 2 August on the Nothe Course. The fleet have a lay day on 5 August before racing resumes on 6 August. The Men’s 470 will play to the Nothe Spectator area again on 9 August where the gold medallists will be decided after the Medal Race.

The fleet is strong and upsets can happen.

Four pairs of brothers - Finland, Netherlands, Russia and Turkey. Oldest helm is Alvaro Marinho (POR), youngest helm is Chile's Benjamin Grez. Oldest crew is Malcolm Page (AUS), youngest crew isScott Flanigan (IRL).

BEN AINSLIE RACING CONFIRM TEAM FOR 2012-2013 AMERICA’S CUP WORLD SERIES
POSTED ON 16 JULY 2012

Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) have confirmed the team that will race with Ainslie for the 2012-2013 America’s Cup World Series, which starts in San Francisco on 23rd August.

The team are no strangers to racing on the wingsailed multihull. Ainslie will be switching from his 15ft singlehanded dinghy to a 45ft catamaran, and with only four days training between the Olympics and the first America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) race in San Francisco, this experience will be vital.

• Ben Ainslie (helm)
• Simon Daubney (headsail trimmer)
• Kyle Langford (wing trimmer)
• Matt Mitchell (runner)
• Simeon Tienpont (bow)

There will be just 11 days between the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics and Ainslie’s America’s Cup World Series debut. “I can’t wait to get racing in the America’s Cup World Series for the first time and with a new team. Personally, it will be a real challenge to get to grips with the powerful AC45s in a limited time frame but the guys in the team are all great sailors and have the experience to get us on the pace as quickly as possible”.

Daubney is a four time America’s Cup winner and raced with Ainslie in the 1851 Cup in Cowes back in 2010. Langford, like Ainslie is a former Youth World Champion and is relishing competing with his new skipper. “Sailing with Ben will be great, I’ve sailed against him a lot in the match racing circuit and this style of racing suits his aggressive style perfectly. Going from the Finn to the AC45 will be a bit of a change but as Ben has shown, he can win in any class and it won’t take him long to adopt to the speed and race format of the ACWS.”

Tienpont and Mitchell are both America’s Cup winners who have previously raced in the America’s Cup World Series with skippers Russell Coutts, the four times America’s Cup winner, and double Olympic medallist Darren Bundock. They will ensure BAR a fast track into the second season of the America’s Cup World Series competition.

Between now and arriving in San Francisco, Ainslie will have his attention completely focused on defending his Olympic title in Finn at London 2012.

2012 470 European Championship

Today, 4 July 2012, the 470 Men and Women Medal Races wrapped up the 2012 470 European Championship with five nations claiming the podium places – Croatia, Germany, Great Britain, Russia, Slovenia.

Sime Fantela/Igor Marenic (CRO) already secured their 2012 470 European Championship title yesterday, after winning race 12 which put them in an unassailable position.

Sophie Weguelin/Sophie Ainsworth (GBR) joined them as 470 Women European Championship winners today in a tense Medal Race sail off with four teams gunning for the podium slots.

The top 10 teams on the leader board in the 470 Men and 470 Women fleets competed in the Medal Race double-points sail off, with the other teams racing a final race. All racing took place on course area B immediately opposite Largs Sailing Club in a windward/leeward format.

Light winds were the order of the day, in what was to prove testing for athletes and the Race Committee.

470 Men
With a night to sleep on their achievement of securing the 470 European Championship title for a second successive year, Sime Fantela was reflective today, “It is great. Yesterday was a bit strange to secure gold ahead of the Medal Race. We have never secured a medal ahead of the Championship finish at senior level. It was a different feeling than other wins.”

The Croatians had no pressure to deliver a top result in the Medal Race, but they always sail every race to win, so it was no different today.

There were two attempts from the Race Committee to get the 470 Men Medal Race completed, but the wind was just not going to play ball. In the first attempt, with the wind disappearing and the teams just about to round the downwind gate, the Race Committee signalled abandonment. Fantela/Marenic were leading.

A 180 degree change of wind direction and the second attempt to start the Medal Race also saw the lead in the hands of the Croatians during the second upwind, when again the race had to be abandoned.

In the dying wind the Race Committee had absolutely no option than to abandon racing, and comfort perhaps that at the point each of the races was abandoned, the positions of the teams in the race would not have changed the eventual outcome of medallists.

Commenting after racing, Fantela said, “Today was all about sailing and enjoying sailing without pressure. We didn’t have to worry about the result and taking care of our opponents. Today was all about tactics and strategy and watching the wind."

Looking forward to getting back home to celebrate, Marenic said, “Of course our friends and family will be at the airport and we will have light celebrations. It is before the Olympics that is why the celebrations will be light!”

And on the motivation their European Championship victory will give them ahead of the Olympics, Marenic continued, “This is a big confidence boost of course, but we will sail every race like it is the race. We will try our best and we have one month to get to know Weymouth a bit better.”

Sailing is becoming increasingly more high profile in Croatia as a result of Fantela/Marenic’s continued successes and the pair are this month featured in one of Croatia’s most popular magazines including a double-page photo spread. Fantela said,“Sailing is getting bigger in Croatia. In the Olympics in individual sports, sailing will have the most athletes. We want to promote our sport and sailing in Croatia and hope more kids, people, sponsors and the government get interested.”

At the start of the first Medal Race attempt, the eventual silver medallists, Ben Saxton/Richard Mason (GBR) looked as though they had blown it. A boat-to-boat infringement on the start line forced them to take two penalty turns and start well after the rest of the fleet who took the left side up the windward leg, with the British taking off to the right.

Saxton said, “The wind was fairly light, it looked difficult, we got a race off fairly quickly. We made a bad start, but we made a great beat and were winning. Then we were still winning at the bottom of the first race when the wind died and it was abandoned,” before concluding, “We are happy and we would have been whatever the scenario today.”

Mason continued by complimenting their main challengers, “The Russians have been our closest rivals this week. We made a good start on them the first couple of days and we had a big jump on them. Then they sailed an incredible middle half of the regatta and really came back strong and were ahead of us for a couple of days. In the end I wouldn’t say we tried to beat them, we weren’t racing hard against them until today. But we managed to stay in front of them and with the race cancelled today we finished second, so we were pretty happy. 2016 is our firm goal. We’ve got Luke and Stu to beat because they are going to continue and a couple of other good British boats. We are going to step our game up and hopefully go to Rio.”

The European bronze medallists, Russia’s Mikhail and Maxim Sheremetyev were thrilled with their result, which ranks as their best to date. Maxim said, “We are happy. I wanted second place, but we are happy. It is our best result ever.”

Next stop for the brothers, as it is for eight of the 470 Men teams competing in the Europeans, is the Olympic Games.

4. Panagiotis KAMPOURIDIS/Efstathios PAPADOPOULOS (GRE) - 80 pts
5. Philip SPARKS/David KOHLER (GBR) – 92 pts
6. Luke RAMSAY/Mike LEIGH (CAN) - 94 pts

470 Women
With the top four teams going into the Medal Race all in contention for medals the pressure was intense. With a four point separation between the top three teams from Great Britain, Germany and Slovenia, and Croatia just slightly behind, there were quite a few scenarios which could have unfolded today.

The British win was by no means easy and at one point during the Medal Race, the Slovenians had the gold medal in their hands ahead of Sophie Weguelin/Sophie Ainsworth.

Ainsworth said, “We had a bit of a tense race, we didn’t have the best start and we were playing catch up from then on. But we knew the Slovenians were winning around the first windward mark and we managed to rein them in downwind. We knew we had the Germans behind us, and then on the last downwind the whole fleet came together and we had to get round before them and luckily we did. The Slovenians beat us in the race, but we had enough of a points margin that we won.”

“It was a bit of a test of nerves and we were both shaking afterwards with all the adrenalin. We are ecstatic that we came through in the end. It gives us a lot of confidence. We’ve been sailing well and hopefully we can repeat that at more events and work our way up and win more. Next it’s back to Weymouth, training with Hannah and Sass in the build-up to the Games. Hopefully we can help them win their gold medal at the Games and in 2016 hopefully you’ll see us on the podium.”

Slovenia's Tina Mrak/Teja Cerne sailed a stunning race to claim the silver. “It is a nice result, we are happy. For us the silver medal is like gold!” said Cerne. “Just a bit more and we could have beaten the British girls, but it is fine we are satisfied with our result. It was a good race for us in very difficult conditions, light wind and shifty so we had to be very patient and concentrate all through the race. This is the best result we have ever achieved and has given us a lot of self-confidence that we can sail well and improve places during an event. We are very optimistic going into the Olympics.”

Annika Bochmann/Elisabeth Panuschka (GER) struggled in the conditions to finish fifth and claim the bronze medal. Bochmann was frustrated with their start but delighted with the outcome, saying, “The start was very strange because of the current. Then the shift went to the right and the left end was favoured, so everyone wanted to start there. So we decided not to go left because there were too many boats and maybe a chance of OCS, so we tacked immediately after the start, but there was no shift on the right so we had no chance. Our goal here was fifth, and now we are third. This is our first medal at a senior event. Today we will celebrate with the team, but we fly home early tomorrow morning, so perhaps a bit more celebrating at home!”

Bochmann has made a name for herself in the junior 470 circuit with World and Junior European titles to her credit with her previous crew, including most recently gold at the 2011 470 Junior Worlds, silver at the 2011 470 Junior Europeans, silver at the 2010 470 Junior Worlds and gold at the 2012 470 Junior Europeans. After pairing up with Panuschka, their first Championship together was the 470 Junior Worlds earlier this year, where they claimed the silver medal.
