Judgment day brings elation for five teams selected for Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in September

San Francisco, Calif., 02/24/2013

Five of the best youth sailing teams in the world have qualified for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup following a grueling two-week Selection Series in San Francisco. The 12 crews, from 11 countries, were pushed to the limit as they fought for the right to compete in September’s races.

National crews from Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland, made the cut to advance to the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup where they will meet five crews supported by current America’s Cup teams.

Double Olympic Gold medalists Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher, the Sports Directors for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, made the selections after closely monitoring the teams on and off the water during the two back-to-back selection weeks. With the high talent level and extreme motivation of the crews, there were hard choices to make.

“This has been very difficult,” Hagara said. “The level of each team is much higher than we could have hoped for, which is good. But only five of them are able to race with us in September so today’s decision wasn’t easy to make.”

Race results made up 60-percent of the selection criteria. Teams were also evaluated on professionalism on and off the water, as well as on the training programs they have set up to develop their skills further between now and September.

“We always said we were looking for the best of the best,” said Steinacher. “And that’s what we have now. I believe any of these five teams will be capable of winning in September.”

The teams proved their mettle in challenging winter conditions on San Francisco Bay, one of the most challenging race venues in the world. Cold and strong winter winds made taming the AC45 catamarans, with their towering wing sails, difficult. But the youth sailors, aged 19-24, were up to the task.

“We went into this with a plan not to let them sail in over 15 knots of wind and to keep the teams inside the Bay Bridge,” Steinacher said. “We broke both of those rules on the very first day! Fortunately, the teams have shown us they are able to handle the boats in conditions that are on the limit.”

The five teams selected today have now qualified to race in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup from September 1-4, in a fleet that includes five additional youth crews supported by current America’s Cup teams.

In their own words:

Lucien Cujean (SUI), skipper, Team TILT: “It feels good, very good. It’s great news. Even though we won the racing portion of the selection series, that’s not the only criteria. So we were nervous about the selection.”

Bernardo Freitas (POR), skipper, ROFF/Cascais Sailing Team: “We’re excited for the announcement. Excited for September. I believed we’d have a chance. In the racing we showed we’re a good team and we have good skills on the water.”

Will Tiller (NZL), skipper, Full Metal Jacket Racing: “We’re pretty psyched. It’s about 5:00 in the morning (the team is in Oman training ahead of an X40 regatta) and we were all sitting around the phone, nervous. But we’re very happy to have made the selection. The opportunity to race the RBYAC is fantastic, but now the hard work begins. We have to put together a training program.

Philipp Buhl (GER), skipper, STG/NRV Youth Team: “It was a brilliant week. We didn’t expect to be first, but we stayed grounded through the week and kept improving. We really improved our maneuvers and team work. In the end, we learned not to talk so much. Everyone learned to do their job and just did it.”

Jason Waterhouse (AUS), skipper, Objective Australia: “It was a mind-blowing week. We learned so much. It’s our first time racing together as a crew, but we gelled well… Our preparation was sound.”

Jimmy Spithill, skipper, ORACLE TEAM USA, and a driving force behind the Red Bull Youth America's Cup: “My pathway to the America’s Cup was one of good luck. When I was a youth sailor there wasn’t a clear pathway to the Cup. But the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup gives these guys a great opportunity, and the game’s opened up to much wider participation. The level of organization from these teams is impressive.”

Russell Coutts, CEO, ORACLE TEAM USA, and a driving force behind the creation of the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup: “The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is meant to be a way for youth sailors to show their talents and make it to the pro sailing ranks. This (on the AC45 wing sail catamaran) is some of the best and most fun racing I’ve done in years. I’m sure they’ll enjoy it too.”

Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12

Lisboa terá Volvo Ocean Race em 2015 e 2018

A assembleia municipal de Lisboa acaba de dar luz verde ao regresso à doca de Pedrouços da Volvo Ocean Race nas edições de 2015 e 2018.

Ian Roman/Volvo Ocean Race

PSD discordou do "enorme custo"

Eight teams, five nations at the Gaastra 52 World Championships

Eight 52’s representing five different countries will challenge for the Gaastra 52 World Championships off Miami’s famous South Beach from March 4th to 9th.

The championships, which return to the Miami for the first time since 2006, are being supported by headline sponsors Gaastra who also enter their own Dutch All-Stars team lead by Gaastra’s Marc Blees.

Entries are confirmed from the USA, Sweden, Great Britain, Holland and Italy and include two teams which have won the world title in the past. As was required at the 52 World Championships till 2007 all boats are for 2013 owner steered.

Defending world champions are Doug deVos’ Quantum Racing, who actually won the title in Porto Cervo, Italy in 2011. The American team have prevailed at three of the last four world championship showdowns, winning in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

The only other team which has won the world title in the past which will line up in Miami is Alberto Roemmers’ Azzurra, which won as Matador in Palma, Mallorca in 2009. Azzurra hold the initiative this season already after having already won the first 52 SUPER SERIES regatta, Quantum Key West 2013.

“We are happy with the entries for the Gaastra 52 World Championships. On the one hand it completely satisfies all the criteria for a world championships including representing two continents and five countries, but also the standard of the teams is very high across the board.” Says Rob Weiland, the 52 Class Manager. Having Gaastra join the championships as sponsor is great news, according to Weiland:

“Gaastra and Gaastra Pro have been involved with the TP52 Class in one way or the other since 2008. As the Official clothing sponsor of the class and its world championships, as clothing sponsor of individual teams and now as official clothing sponsor of the 52 Super Series, co-sponsor of the 52 Worlds, as well as an actual participant at the Gaastra 52 Worlds.” Continues Weiland, “This is based on the owner of Gaastra Pro, Marc Blees, a keen sailor himself and a big fan of the TP52 and the 52 Super Series, being attracted by proper racing combined with good social scene onshore as well as the possible synergies between the high profile status of both brands.”

Typical wind conditions for March on the Miami coast are anywhere between 10 and 20kts, usually with relatively flat water but peppered with some strong localised currents. The plan is to run racing on at least two days in front of South Beach, in front of the cityscape which should allow some exciting images to be captured. Racing runs from Tuesday 5th March through to Saturday 9th March with windward-leeward racing scheduled each day.

“We are very happy to be able to support the Gaastra 2 World Championship as a sponsor but it is an event which we would just not miss as fans and sailors. We love the class, the excitement and the racing and so we have taken the chance to come along and race as well.” Explains Gaastra Pro’s Marc Blees.

The Gaastra 52 World Championships will be run alongside the HPR Midwinter Championship for HPR 40 footers.

Changing fortunes for second Red Bull Youth America’s Cup selection series

Skipper Bernardo Freitas (left) and the ROFF/Cascais Sailing Team (©ACEA 2013/Photo: Gilles Martin-Raget).

The second Red Bull Youth America’s Cup selection series commenced today withteams from Argentina, Great Britain, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland in San Francisco with the hope of being selected for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup final in September.

Similar to the first selection series last week, the youth sailors, aged 19-24, went through an orientation process today where they were introduced to some of the sailors/coaches they’ll work with this week as well as the AC45 catamarans they’ll sail.

“We’re very happy to be here,” said Bernardo Freitas, skipper of the ROFF/Cascais Sailing Team from Portugal. “We have big expectations this week. We’ve done some practicing at home and expect a good result this week.”

Freitas sailed at the London-Weymouth Olympic Regatta last summer in the 49er and finished 8th in his first Olympics. America’s Cup World Series sailors such as Chris Draper (Prada Challenge), Nathan Outteridge (Artemis Racing) and Peter Burling (Team Korea) have jumped into the AC45 from the 49er, and Freitas is expecting a smooth transition.

“It’s my first time sailing a catamaran, but I’ve been speaking with Nathan, who’s a friend of mine and I don’t think it will be that difficult a transition,” said Freitas. “The reactions are similar to that of a 49er, but you have to adjust your timing. But the 49er is more difficult in the windy conditions because it is more unstable. You can’t control it; it controls you.”

Freitas should have an enjoyable week learning the AC45.

Today’s orientation also saw the sailors put through the dreaded fitness test. During the first selection series, there were many jokes made about the fitness test, much of the time at the expense of the Danish Youth Vikings. Unknowingly, the crew gobbled down some “American-sized burritos” before the test, which includes five minutes on a variable resistance grinding machine. Needless to say, some of the sailors had their burritos come back up shortly after the test concluded.

The weather this week looks to be a challenge. Principal Race Officer John Craig is determined to get in the 18 races in the schedule, but that could be a challenge given the forecast. Rain and strong winds are expected tomorrow, and could be in the cards for later in the week as well.

In a coincidence of the calendar, seven of the approximately 40 sailors at this week’s selection series will celebrate their birthday. None of the sailors in the first selection series had birthdays. Today we shout out to Portugal’s Freitas, who turns 23, and Italian trimmer Jas Farnetti, who turns 22.

“I get eight more hours to celebrate,” said Freitas, who was serenaded with the Portuguese version of “Happy Birthday” from his teammates at the end of the day. “The calls from home started coming in last night and today I have gotten a lot of congratulations for making it here.”

VIDEO: It’s not just a job

Fonte: ETNZ

Ask anyone at Emirates Team New Zealand, and they will tell you that working for the team is so much more than just a job.
It takes long, hard work, big sacrifice and total commitment, but the end goal and the chance of winning the America’s cup will make it all worthwhile, and of course the chance to do what you love everyday.

AC72 Mk II goes sailing for the first time

Emirates Team New Zealand took its second AC72 catamaran sailing for the first time today. It was a much-anticipated day, another big step on the way to the 34th America’s Cup competition at San Francisco.Chris Cameron’s pictures from today are here and here

Racing in the Louis Vuitton Cup, the challenger elimination series, start in less than five months.

Before that, the team has to complete an exhaustive two-month testing and training programme on the AC72 at Auckland, before packing the base and shipping race yachts, chase boats and the team’s entire support infrastructure to San Francisco.

The team expects to be sailing on San Francisco Bay towards the end of May.

Today, after waiting for the breeze to fill in, the cat left the dock at 12.30pm in a north-easterly between 8-11 knots.

Under the watchful eyes of designers, engineers, and system specialists on chase boats, the sailing crew eased into the day’s sailing programme.

The race yacht returned to base late afternoon, having completed the day’s schedule. The team stays on shore tomorrow with the second sailing day on Thursday.

Yanmar eleita pela Team Oracle USA

ORACLE TEAM USA announced today that Yanmar has been selected as Official Technical Partner. Yanmar, a Japanese company with an intimate knowledge of the world’s oceans, will provide engines for ORACLE TEAM USA’s chase boats during the bid to defend the34th America’s Cup this September.

Yanmar President Takehito Yamaoka gave his full backing to the partnership, saying: “We are fully committed to supporting ORACLE TEAM USA in their bid to win the 34th America’s Cup. Yanmar is proud to become the Official Technical Partner for ORACLE TEAM USA. It is a natural partnership in such a technically demanding field as high performance sailing. We believe their high standards and dedication to perfection complements the way Yanmar operates.”

Through the partnership, Yanmar will provide reliable power for ORACLE TEAM USA’s chase boat program based in San Francisco. The team operates a fleet of chase boats which serves to assist all aspects of the program, from launching the racing yachts to on-water safety. As the team’s AC72 yachts can reach speeds of up to 40 knots, the Yanmar engines will allow the chase boats to maintain the power, agility and endurance required to support the yachts through the variable conditions on the San Francisco Bay.

“We are very excited to partner with Yanmar for this34th America’s Cup campaign,” said ORACLE TEAM USA CEO Russell Coutts. “Yanmar is recognized world-wide for their tremendous expertise in marine engines and technology. It is their precision engineering that will power our chase boats, allowing us to perform the many critical functions required both throughout training and on race day. Yanmar provides a vital component to our program, and it is fantastic to have them onboard.”

Yanmar, one of the world’s leading engine manufacturing companies, has an extensive product range that includes engines, drive systems and accessories for all types of boats. The company entered the powerboat engine market in 1989 and has steadily increased its presence as a manufacturer of high performance, high quality engines. Yanmar has an extensive product lineup that includes a wide range of marine engines.
