2012 470 JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Racing Abandoned on Day 6 Due to Light Winds
Issued: 2 February 2012

Today was the final day to make the cut through to the top 10 teams in the Mixed/Men's fleet, and the Women's fleet at the 2012 470 Junior World Championships. At Takapuna Boating Club the day began very quietly with no wind, no sun and a light drizzle of warm rain. Sailors left the shore around 1100 hours when there was a hint of a breeze and by midday the first attempt at race 11 of the twelve race series was underway.

On the course today there was an unusual south southeast (SSE) wind direction for the Waitemata Harbour. This fickle light wind comes from the off the land, but with Rangitoto Island adding shelter. After rain overnight, the atmosphere was heavily humid and hot. Difficult conditions for the Race Management team who had to abandon race 11 as the wind had died out. Shortly after, the decision was made to abandon racing for the day.

2012 470 JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Event Preview - Sivitz Kosuta/ Farneti (ITA) and Afrodite Kyranakou/Jeske Kisters (NED) Continue to Lead at 470 Junior Worlds

Issued: 1 February 2012

At the 2012 470 Junior World Championship, sailed out of Takapuna Boating Club on Auckland's North Shore, ten races have been completed. Simon Sivitz Kosuita/Jas Farneti of Italy continued their winning ways, and the consistency of Afrodite Kyranakou/Jeske Kisters of the Netherlands kept the women's crew just clear of their rivals.

Racing conditions returned to the prevailing breeze of this regatta. The offshore south westerly, with it's shifty and patchy gusts, is hard to read and was described as "a crazy breeze" by at least one sailor who lost 10 boats when missing a shift. The wind was 15-18 knots.

470 Men/Mixed
Sivitz Kosuta/Farneti began the day with yet another win, but it was the Netherlands crew of Dirk Bennen/Rogier Weijers who claimed line honours in race 10. This brings Bennen/Weijers up into third place on the leader board after beginning the day on sixth, while the ever consistent local lads James Turner/Finn Drummond put in a solid performance with a second and fifth placing which tightened their grip on second position. Snakes and ladders in the challenging conditions is to be expected and today was no exception in the fleet - Magnus MasilgeMoritz Klingenberger have climbed from eighth to fifth, while young Greek sailors Alexandros and George Kavvas have dropped two places in the heavier breeze.

470 Women
A run of second places has put seven points between series leaders Netherland's Afrodite Kyranakou/Jeske Kisters and new combination Annika Bochmann/Elisabeth Panuschka. Bochmann is the defending 470 Junior World Champion with her previous crew, so has plenty of experience to call on.

A first placing in race nine brought the German girls a little closer to their goal, but a drop in the second race relieved the pressure on Kyranakou/Kisters once again. Despite a DNF (did not finish) the British crew Anna Burnet/Flora Stewart remain in third, but Chika Hatae/Eri Hatayama of Japan are now within contention following a win in the second race today.

2012 470 JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

26 January - 3 February 2012, Takapuna, New Zealand

Day 4 Report - Have Italian’s Simon Sivitz Kosuta/Jas Farneti moved beyond reach at the 2012 470 Junior Worlds?

At the 2012 470 Junior Worlds, the Italian crew of Simon Sivitz Kosuta/Jas Farneti have possibly moved beyond reach after adding two more wins to their scorecard. Conditions on the Waitemata Harbour were a photographer’s dream. Blue sky, sparkling water, white caps and a moderate sea breeze, along with a fleet of young sailors concentrated on close competition provided a wonderful scene today.

The 2012 470 Junior World Championship is being hosted by Takapuna Boating Club in Auckland, New Zealand,

470 Men/Mixed
Sivitz Kosuta/Farneti are now 22 points ahead of their nearest rivals, but James Turner/Finn Drummond of New Zealand are holding off the competition snapping at their heels from across the Tasman. Following a third in the first race of the day, Turner/Drummond hit a mark and had to do turns which lost them a few places in the second race. However they still have six points on the Crawford brothers of Australia.

“They [the Italians] are going really well, they’re not unbeatable, but very good,” commented Finn Drummond, who is keen on stealing a race or two from the lead team before the event is over. “I was quite rusty initially after a year out of the 470 but as this regatta has progressed we’ve got more consistent. James is putting the boat in good positions, we have good speed and it’s going well."

Matthew and Robert Crawford were coming into contact with objects in the water themselves... after racing the Australian team were discussing 'contact' between their centre board and a shark, following the incident several coaches witnessed the shark take a few flips in the air. The boys said the shark didn't help their speed today, but they were enjoying the lighter and more stable winds.

Another sibling team, Alexandros and George Kavvas of Greece also enjoyed the sailing today, and though they are used to a variety of conditions this was their favourite. The brothers are one of the younger crews in the fleet, at 15 and 16 years of age respectively, and as such they are also one of the lighter crews.

Having moved into the class only three months ago, after sailing in the International 420 Class, they feel they have better boat handling in the light which was demonstrated by a second and a fifth placing today. The Greek brothers came to the regatta to gain experience and have a goal of finishing in the top 12, and would be even more pleased if they made it into the top ten and were able to take part in the medal race on Friday.

470 Women
Consistency and two second place scores keeps the Netherlands crew, Afrodite Kyranakou/Jeske Kisters, five points ahead of rivals Annika Bochmann/Elisabeth Panuschka of Germany.

Bochmann/Panuschka finished the day on a high with a win which turned the tables with British crew Anna Burnet/Flora Stewart. With four more races to go it's still anyone’s game in the women's fleet, with the first four crews having bit of a jump on the remainder of the fleet.

Over the next two days four more races are scheduled, the south westerly is expected to return for a day of patchy offshore conditions, with another change in direction the following day so there is a way to go yet for the sailors.

Principal Race Officer Ian Clouston is hopeful that the wind will be coming out of the south east by Friday which would enable the race management team to lay the finish mark just off the shore which would be a fitting end to the regatta.

2012 470 JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Day 2 Report - Italian Team Enjoy the Breeze and Good Speed

Issued: 29 January 2012

The second day of racing in the 2012 470 Junior World Championship, sailed out of Takapuna Boating Club, is over for the day. The breeze was up but the junior crews handled it well with close racing throughout the single fleet, but the Italian men's crew Simon Sivitz Kosuta/Jas Farneti dominated results.

470 Men/Mixed
Sivitz Kosuta/Farneti added another two winning races to their score today in conditions which seemed to suit them very well. "We worked the right after seeing it was better before the start. Wind was similar direction to yesterday. We have good speed and are really enjoying the Mackay charter boat,"commented Sivitz Kosuta.

From early morning the Waitemata Harbour was covered in whitecaps, and gusts of up to 20 knots came across the race course which was set between Rangitoto Island and the shore. No sun broke through the leaden sky, the breeze built increasingly through the day and continued its shifty and cool blow from the south.

Anticipating the shifts is always a challenge and today second placed crew James Turner/Finn Drummond of New Zealand "took our chances and had some great comebacks." A pair of third placings puts them five points behind the leaders. Dirk Bennen/Rogier Weijers of the Netherlands are placed third and though race four wasn't one their best, the dropped score came in and put them ahead of early race leaders, the Matthew and Robert Crawford of Australia, on count back.

Afrodite Kyranakou/Jeske Kisters of the Netherlands hold onto their lead with the slimmest of margins after Annika Bochmann/Elisabeth Panuschka of Germany came away with two wins within the women's fleet, and were pleased to have been footing it with the men in the overall standings, commenting "finally we're in the front of the overall fleet, finished 7th overall in the last race. Reaching was tricky, we hoisted later allowing us to lay while others behind had to blow their halyard."

British crew Anna Burnet and Flora Stewart are placed third after placing third in both races.

The regatta has another five days to go, and with 12 races scheduled followed by a medal race for both the Women's fleet and the Men/Mixed fleet we are still in the early stages of the competition. The forecast for tomorrow is continuing south westerlies of 20-30 knots easing on Monday to 15 knots. Following this the maritime forecast is predicting a change to around to the north, so sailors will get a taste of a range of conditions through the regatta.
