52 Super Series- World Championship - Azzurra opening day stars
Fonte: 52 Super Series
After triumphing with a consistent display in Key West in January, Azzurra seemed to have continued in their winning ways today when they made the strongest opening to the Gaastra 52 World Championships in light and very challenging conditions off Miami Beach.

Azzurra’s effervescent tactician Vasco Vascotto is on something of a winning run, backing up that 52 SUPER SERIES win in Key West with an overall world title win on Pisco Sour in the Soto 40 class the following week in Chile and then a Melges 32 regatta win in the Caribbean.

Moth Worlds - Final
Fonte: VSail
The 2012 Zhik Nautica Moth World Championships went down to the wire and were decided in the very last race in fabulous conditions. Joshua McKnight kept his calm, sailed nearly flawlessly and prevailed over fellow countryman Scott Babbage with two bullets in three races. Rob Gough had a very good last day and snatched third place overall from Anthony Kotoun in the last race.
Campione del Garda, 26 August 2012: If Scott Babbage capsizes at the first weather mark then words are not enough to describe the tough, demanding but equally spectacular conditions on a race course. The “Pelèr”, the morning northerly breeze on lake Garda, was blowing furiously from early on and with a violent storm forecast to hit Campione del Garda in the afternoon, the race committee had scheduled a 10am start. That gave the 60-strong Gold fleet of moths the opportunity to sail three exciting races that saw Joshua McKnight prevail, practically from start to finish.
When the race committee fired the gun for the day’s first race, the 20-25 knots of Pelèr and one-meter waves were guaranteed to put a big strain on the sailors and their boats. Both Babbage and McKnight had a clean start in the middle of the line and headed to the right-hand side of the course, as close to the eastern shore of lake Garda as possible. Babbage was in the lead at the first top mark with McKnight hot on his heels. That’s when opportunity knocked on McKnight’s door. A few hundred meters after the distance marker Babbage capsized and went for a swim. Not only did McKnight assume control of the race, he stretched his lead and won with ease, ahead of Babbage and fellow Australian Rob Gough who would start his best day in the event.

With no racing on day two, the wind returned with a 25 knots and 1m waves on Lake Garda for the morning of day three of the Zhik Nautica Moth World Championship, giving way in the afternoon to the dwindling Ora wind.
These variable conditions seemed to make no difference to Australian Scott Babbage, who posted three bullets, in the first three of today's four races. Overall this leaves him nine points clear of second placed Anthony Kotoun, who proved to be a master of the light to moderate local Ora afternoon breeze. Comfortable in these conditions, the US Virgin Islands sailor pushed Joshua McKnight down to third overall with Bora Gulari (USA) and Joe Turner (AUS) completing the top five.
To make up for yesterday's lack of racing, so an 08:30 start was scheduled today, the Moth sailors bracing themselves for spectacular
conditions off Campione del Garda. And so in the big breeze there was plenty of capsizes, crashes and swims. But this separated the men from the boys.
In the Yellow fleet, Babbage led from start to finish while in the Blue fleet there was a fight between Joshua McKnight, Joe Turner and Rob Gough, the latter scoring his first victory so far.
When the race committee gave the signal for the second race, the Pelèr was already fading and shifting. Although still fresh, the lighter breeze and the flatter seas didn't provide the same amount of excitement.
Once again, Scott Babbage dominated the Yellow fleet with Chris Rashley coming second behind him. Although Babbage has denied the young British sailor any race wins his consistent performance has allowed him to make inroads to climb into the top five.
After a break ashore to wait for the Ora to build, the fleet took to the water for two more races.
For the Yellow fleet, the third race of the day was marked by the match race between Scott Babbage and Mach 2 designer Andrew McDougall. McDougall built an immense lead over the rest of the fleet at the first weather mark but metre by metre, Babbage closed in on him pipping him at the post.
In the fourth and last race of the day the shifting and dying breeze made it necessary for the Race Committee to shorten course at the bottom mark. Joe Turner dominated the Blue fleet from the outset while in the Yellow fleet Babbage had his worst result of the week so far. Although he was third at the top mark he slipped to 11th by the finish line.
Although Thursday was initially scheduled to be a lay day, the race committee will try to hold two more qualification races starting at 1400 local time. Once again, the weather forecast is quite similar to what we have seen so far and as a result the Moths will have to fly in a light to moderate Ora breeze.
“We had some very good racing in the morning," recounted Babbage on his performance: "The first race of the afternoon was a very close one with Andrew McDougall and I’m not sure whether I beat him or beat me. It was too close to tell. In the last race the breeze died at the top. A few boats got away and then the race committee decided to finish the race at the bottom, so there wasn’t any opportunity. I’m satisfied with my overall performance and I find the morning races much more fun than the afternoon ones. The afternoon races are pretty painful but the morning races are great fun. I hope we do more of these.“
While Babbage is dominating this Zhik Nautica Moth World Championship, the defending champion Nathan Outteridge isn't here, occupied at the helm of Team Korea at the America's Cup World Series in San Francisco. "It would have been good to have him here," said Babbage. "He’s always a good competitor and it’s good when you take races off him. He’s good fun to sail against and I beat him in the Australian nationals, the first regatta I've beaten him in in 10 years. That was good but I think that if he did the Worlds he would definitely be
hard to beat.”
Anthony Kotoun added: “I had a good day. The morning winds are usually not my strength and I’m not as good in the waves. It showed in the first where I led at the weather mark and then downwind went for a bunch of swims. I gained boats on the upwind but then lost on the downwind. I still finished tenth, which was much better than I thought. In the second race of the morning it got light, I sailed well and finished second. This afternoon upwind was my strength and I got a second and a third.
"I’m very, very, very satisfied with my second place overall so far. My goal here was to finish in the top 10. I’ve never done a World Championship in the Moth before. I’ve been sailing this boat for year and a half, so I was hoping for a top ten. I thought a top five would be possible if I had a really good regatta. I realise I am still a rookie and I have some hurdles to overcome but these conditions are mine. If it gets out of this range I don’t expect to keep this train rolling but for now I’ll take it.”

Muscat, Oman – Tuesday 19 June – Oman is set to host one of the largest international sporting events in the Sultanate’s history after Oman Sail won the rights to stage the Laser World Championships in Mussanah Sports City in 2013.
An official ceremony to mark the signing of the historic agreement on Tuesday was attended by HE Sheikh Rashad Al Hinai, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports Affairs; David Graham, Oman SailCEO; Issa Al Ismaili, Oman Sail’s Director of Events and Jeff Martin, Executive Secretary of the International Laser Class Association.

Laser fleet – Second Asian Beach Games – Muscat 2010
More than 1,000 visitors and their teams from around 60 nations are expected to attend the three events between November 2013 and January 2014.
Recent World Championships have been held in Australia and Germany and Oman has been able to match the strict hosting criteria, which includes accommodation, equipment, good weather and sailing conditions plus a knowledgeable and experienced racing management team.
Jeff Martin, Executive Secretary of the ILCA said: “Demand is pretty high for venues and we have always been at the forefront of going to new places.
“We have closely followed the development of sailing in Oman and were impressed with the dynamics within Oman Sail that has seen them build a sport from the bottom up, engaging Omani sailors and Omani people in the infrastructure. Hopefully, this event will be the first of many.
“There has to be a legacy for sailing in the host country. Lasers are an important part of sailing development throughout the region and Oman is involved in a very substantial and significant way.”

HE Sheikh Rashad Al Hinai, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sport Affairs said securing such a major sporting event represented a proud moment for Oman:
“Sailing has been a big part of our heritage over the past centuries and has continued to progress. Oman Sail has played a crucial role in developing sailing in the country and bringing the Laser World Championships to Oman.
“This will be the Sultanate’s second championship after the Beach Handball World Championship that takes place in July 2012 at Mussanah. The infrastructure, facilities and wind conditions at Mussanah Sports city provide an ideal platform for hosting the Laser World Championship.
“This event will motivate us to host more high calibre international events in the future that in turn will help promote the Sultanate’s hosting ability while inspiring the young Omanis to represent their country and make the Sultanate proud.”
Oman Sail’s CEO, Mr David Graham added: “We are delighted to be granted the privilege of hosting the 2013 Laser World Championships. This event gives an opportunity to showcase Oman in all its natural beauty to an international audience through sport, which aligns perfectly with Oman Sail’s strategy. The Laser World Championship is at the pinnacle of dingy racing; it is the world’s most popular race boat and having this event in Muscat will be an inspiration to the youth currently engaged in our grassroots programmes."

Anunciada novas estruta de markting e vendas do SB20
Fonte: Sail-World

The global sales and marketing of the hugely successful sportsboat (formerly known as the Laser SB3) is to be carried out by a new organisation, Sportsboat World, Tony Castro announced today. The boat which will now be known as the SB20 has over 650 boats sailing in 20 countries worldwide, and it achieved ISAF recognition in 2007.
Sportsboat World is founded by SB20 designer Tony Castro.

In partnership with Jerry Hill, Alan Hillman and Mark Richards, Sportsboat World will promote the design and manufacture of sportsboats. Jerry is a former UK Class Chairman and 2010 SB3 world champion, whilst Alan and Mark are the partners of the SB3 specialists firm Rigging Gurus.
Tony Castro has appointed White Formula in the UK, who built the first 50 boats in 2002, as the licensed SB20 builder. New boats have been ordered and are due for delivery from 1st August 2012. Parts are available with immediate effect from Sportsboat World and via a revised dealer network. Sportsboat World will work with the SB20 World Council and National Associations to provide an event circuit to appeal to sailors internationally.
President of the SB20 World Council, Edward Russo (FRA) expressed his pleasure in the announcement of the developments for the SB20 class. 'This is extremely good news for the SB20 class which is currently experiencing strong growth in several countries. I am especially pleased to see the SB20 production being moved back to the UK. The promise of quality new boats, a steady supply of spares as well as technical support means the SB20 will continue to provide cost effective, international one-design competitive sailing for a long time to come.'
Glenn Bourke current Australian National Champion and 2012 Worlds host, is in full support of the new structure. 'I am delighted to hear that the SB20 class is in the hands of people who have been racing in it since it's inception. Like everyone who loves this class, I look forward a seamless transition to the production of new high quality boats. We’re ramping up for the Worlds in Hamilton Island in December and 2012 is shaping up to be yet another great year for the SB20!'
FAQ's:
License Agreement
What has changed?
Tony Castro, as the designer of the SB20, gave LaserPerformance (LP) the distribution rights to what has been known as the Laser SB3, through a Licence Agreement from 2001. This License Agreement has now been terminated. The reasons for its termination are confidential to Tony Castro and LP.
Who holds the license now?
Under the new structure Tony Castro retains the licence himself, and independently licenses the manufacturer of the boat, spars and sails. The new company Sportsboat World oversees the building of the boat, global sales distribution and general management.
Name of Boat, Laser Name and SB20 Trademarks
Will the boat name change?
The boat is now known as the SB20. The term Laser will no longer be used.
Why SB20?
The boat was originally called the SB3 as it was a '3 crew Sportsboat'. This was not commonly understood, especially with many boats sailing with 4 crew. SB20 represents '20 foot sportsboat.'
Will the Laser trademark continue?
No. The Laser trademark will not be used for the new boats, new sails and new spare parts.
Can the existing boat owners continue to use the Laser trademark (leave the Laser sticker on their boats and sails)?
Yes. There is no restriction on existing branding. New sails, new boats, websites, communication and events will use the new SB20 name.
Global Distribution
How is the SB20 be managed?
The Head Office function is managed by Sportsboat World (SBW) in the UK. SBW will organise the global distribution structure via licensed dealers around the world.
Will the existing Dealer network remain in place?
SBW are retaining most of the existing dealers, especially where they have been successful in building and supporting an existing fleet.
Who are Sportsboat World?
Please refer to the Press Release. SBW has premises around 5 miles outside of Hamble in theUK. The Hamble river has the highest concentration of SB20?s anywhere in the world, and the major suppliers are all represented close by.
Does Sportsboat World have other responsibilities?
SBW is the UK SB20 dealer.
How will SBW and its dealer network support the class?
SBW and its dealer network are working with the regional Class Association on events, to ensure that the racing is fun, competitive and in the right locations.
New Boats
Can I buy a new SB20 now?
Yes.
Who do I contact for a new boat?
Visit here. The full global dealer list will be published shortly, but in the mean time, SBW will be able to help or point you in the direction of your dealer.
Where are the new boats built?
White Formula builds the SB20. They were the original builder in theUK. The decision to revert to them was based on build quality, shipping and logistics.
Will DK Boats continue to build SB20?s?
No.
Has the new SB20 changed?
SBW will incorporate a number of small changes, to improve the sailing experience and iron out any small technical issues. SBW are ensuring that the strict one design nature of the boat is maintained, so any changes have no implications on the speed of the boat.
Who guarantees the new boats?
The manufacturer of boats, sails, spars and parts have warranties for the products they produce. The warranty process is managed by Sportsboat World and the respective dealers.
Sails and Spare Parts
Where do we buy new sails and spare parts?
All sails, spars and spare parts are available exclusively through the new SB20 dealer network.
Is there a sail levy?
Yes. A small sail levy will be paid directly to the World Council. This will be used to help fund events. This levy is included in the retail price.
Events
What will the events be known as?
All future events will be held as the SB20 class. The official name will be changed at ISAF, and the class constitution and class rules will be adjusted accordingly through appropriate procedures.
Does this change effect the 2012 European and World Championships?
No. These events will be run exactly as planned. There will simply be a class name change to the SB20.

Slam to back J/80 Worlds

New J/80 campaigner and owner of Slam UK, Chris Ducker, steps forward with signficant support for June's event in Dartmouth
Monday February 13th 2012, Author: Becci Eplett, Location: none selected
Slam UK is to be the major sponsorship of the 2012 J/80 World Championship, which will now be 'Powered by Slam'.
The regatta will take place over 9-15 June, jointly hosted by the Britannia Yacht Club, the Royal Dart Yacht Club and the J/80 UK Class Association. Both the Opening Ceremony and the Prizegiving Ceremony for 2012 J/80 World Championship Powered by Slam will take place at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon.
In addition to significant financial support for the regatta, the partnership with Slam UK will bring style, flair and inimitable glamour to the event, along with real and quantifiable added value for the competitors of the 80 teams due to compete.
Chris Ducker, owner of Slam UK, will also be racing his brand new J/80 at the Worlds. He explained his passion for Slam and his commercial desire to be involved at a grass roots level with the J/80 Worlds: "I am delighted to have an opportunity to work with the Key Yachting team and for Slam to sponsor the 2012 J/80 Worlds; this will certainly be a fantastic event on and off the water. I look forward enormously to sailing and socialising in the J Community throughout the 2012 season."
At the London Boat Show in January, Slam UK was also appointed official clothing partner of Key Yachting Ltd, the UK agent and distributor for the J/80 Sportsboat and for the whole range of yachts by J Boats.
This is the first time Key Yachting has entered in to a partnership of this sort. Paul Heys, Managing Director explained "There is a strong parallel between the design credentials of the Slam technological clothing range and J Boats, not least in the fundamentally intelligent and performance oriented design. I've worn Slam kit on the water for a number of years and it unfailingly delivers the results one expects. This new partnership is great for Key Yachting and it will also prove extremely valuable to our clients during the coming year. Competitors at the 2012 J/80 World Championship Powered by Slam have a real treat in store."
Entries for the 2012 J/80 World Championship are rolling in at serious pace now. The online entry system can be found here. Brittany Ferries has offered discounted pricing for J/80 teams travelling to the UK from the continent.
February may be frosty but the competition in Dartmouth in June is looking hotter than ever.

ISAF WC Day 9
Fonte: Perth 2011
